PARIS / PAVILLON PUEBLA

30.9.16

A kind of historic hunting house style dating back to the Napoleon III days, Le Pavillon Puebla has for centuries hosted private events and weddings on one of the hillsides of the dramatic Parc des Buttes Chaumont.  Until recently it was run by an Italian who struggled to maintain a steady clientelle, when the Mairie de Paris intervened and allowed a four-some of guys -- known for drawing Parisians to boîtes that are perched up high, such as Le Perchoir and La Passarelle à Boulogne -- to take over and make their magic.

Le Pavillon Puebla has two different terraces with an eclectic mix of lounge beds, Moroccan chairs, and tables made of pallets (this is also everywhere now in Paris).   The feeling was very <laisser faire> as, immediately upon climbing the stairs, you are informed that if you want to drink or eat, you will need to traipse through the interior of mismatched furniture, game tables and dusty coat checks in order to arrive to another outside bar where someone will eventually acknowledge and serve you. I mean this in the nicest possible way, because it made us instantly feel like we were just hanging out at someone's home.  The sun and the little wee toddlers running all around in every direction also contributed to this 'in the family' feeling.  You just want to hang out and never leave.

BELIEVE IN / UNICORNS

26.9.16

One of my favorite fairy tales of all time is The Last Unicorn.  Written by Peter S. Beagle first as a novel in 1968 and then as a film in 1982 -- with a stellar cast (Mia Farrow, Jeff Bridges, Alan Arkin, Christopher Lee, and Angela Lansbury) -- it's my Go-To book whenever I want to escape into a comforting world where unicorns run free and fall in love with princes.  What?  That could happen.

So I was super excited to stumble upon this new brand, Believe In Unicorns, offering uni-corns that you can purchase for a mere £13.  Choose from white, black or rainbow color, and mix and match things like diamond bases, fur trim, and pink flowers.

PARIS / lunch @ THE RITZ, L'ESPADON

23.9.16

With Paris Fashion Week coming up, getting away from it all will be of paramount importance.  I always like to treat myself to lunch at the Ritz's L'Espadon. Depending on what time of the day you arrive, you can enjoy a sophisticated prix fixe menu by culinary genius Nicholas Sale in just one hour -- either in the atrium or at one of the glamorous tables in the salon.  It was also the same place where Coco Chanel and the Nazis would cheerfully eat during WWII while the rest of the world was falling to pieces.

TeeChip.com is offering this très funny mini collection consisting of a tank, tee and hoodie all donning a graphic of this most yoga-liscious unicorn who probably forgot to pop its pro-biotic that morning.  But hey, when your tail is a rainbow, how bad could it smell?

PARIS / Le Charbon

15.9.16

It's not every day that I fall in love with a new café in Paris.  But the moment that I walked up to Le Charbon about a week ago, I knew it would be my new amour.  Located right in the middle of Oberkampf -- Paris' hipster, bustling, Adidas-wearing, rolled up skinny jeans, midi skirts, oversized Trench area -- this café ironcially dates back to the Second Empire (when Napoleon III was still kicking around).  Le Charbon has all of the fixins of Paris cafés past: red velvet banquettes, a shiny bar, tarnished mirrors, and garçons with an attitude.  And yet it is full of young people who will chat the night away over a glass, or two.

ART / La Vie En Bleu by DANIEL ARSHAM

9.9.16

It's only Daniel Arsham's 11th exhibition with Galerie Perrotin, but it's hardly his last.  So think me.  Only because this show is such a break through in terms of size, use of color, and subject matter.  Mixing together such things as a 16mm film projector rendered in ash and hydrostone, a 20th century iconic guitar, materials such as stone, crystal and ash, Arsham has commendably created a larger-than-life space that might just make you sit back and think.  Or buy blueberries the next time you're at the supermarket.
